We’ve finally had the first few warm sunshine days of the year, and households across the UK have been dusting off their barbecues, ready for the first summer parties of the season. We don’t use the term ‘dusting off’ literally here, however. Barbecues that haven’t been used since last summer can be thick with grease, grime and bits of burnt-on food, making them something of a nightmare to clean, not to mention a health hazard. So, what is the best way to clean your barbecue ready for the summer entertaining season? Let’s take a look!

Heat helps move muck

One very handy tip is to preheat your barbecue before starting to tackle all of that charred grease. Heat will help to loosen the grime, making it easier to clean – just be careful of the temperature, as you don’t want to burn yourself while you’re cleaning! Then, once the grill is clean, you’ll be able to start cooking straight away. Just remember to make sure you’ve removed absolutely all of the dirt before placing burgers or sausages on the barbie, as it can be really easy to give yourself or your guests food poisoning if you’re not being mindful of hygiene best practice.

What to use to clean your barbecue

Bbq Cleaning TipsUsing strong chemical-based cleaning products to clean a barbecue isn’t necessarily the best idea, as there is a chance that some of the substance could end up on your food, making you ill. Instead, it’s better to use household ingredients, such as bicarbonate of soda, which is a naturally abrasive product, meaning it’s brilliant at getting grease and grime unstuck, even when it’s been there for a long time. Some people swear by using half an onion to clean their barbecue grill too. Simply slice the vegetable in half, warming it a little as you preheat the barbecue, then rub it along the dirt you’re trying to remove, and its natural acidity should help to move it along. Just make sure to dispose of the onion away from the rest of the food you’re planning to cook afterwards – you don’t want it to end up threaded onto someone’s kebab by mistake!

Using vegetable oil mixed with water in place of washing-up liquid is another barbecue cleaning hack to try, allowing you to get rid of tough dirt without covering your appliance in potentially harmful chemicals. Don’t forget about the rest of your outdoor space either when getting ready for your barbecue. Speak to our team about our patio cleaning service to make sure your garden looks clean enough to eat your burger off.

Make it a barbecue to remember

Domestic Cleaning TipsImpress your barbecue guests with some seriously tasty grub that isn’t just the usual sausages, burgers, processed white rolls and tomato ketchup. Colourful kebabs made from chunks of chopped vegetables like peppers, courgettes and red onion are lovely when grilled on the barbie. Add some halloumi too, as it will go beautifully crisp on the outside, but keep its gorgeous cheesy centre, keeping your vegetarian guests happy.

If you’re planning to stick with the classics, make sure you’re putting some effort into your sides to make your barbecue stand out from everyone else’s this year. Make your own salsa or homemade coleslaw, serve up pitta breads instead of the usual rolls and take the time to prepare tasty pasta or couscous salads that everyone can help themselves from.

It’s not regular date nights, remembering anniversaries or even having kids that is most likely to make or break a relationship, but taking responsibility for washing the dishes. How so? According to research carried out by the Council on Contemporary Families in the US, the washing up can be a huge cause of arguments in a relationship, but heterosexual couples who take the time to clean their dishes properly typically have better sex lives.

How dirty dishes can ruin a relationship

Washing Up Can Break RelationshipThe report from the Council on Contemporary Families looked into how households tend to split domestic chores, and how much time each half of a couple spends cleaning on average. It was found that while women still take responsibility for a greater proportion of the housework than men (14 hours compared to four hours per week on average), men are taking on more chores than ever before. Researchers also looked into how the way couples divide chores between them impacts on their relationship, and it was found that when one partner fails to wash up, leaving dirty dishes lying around, tension can build and resentments often arise.

Dr Sharon Sassler, a professor from the department of policy analysis and management at Cornell University and one of the report’s authors, explained that expecting the other partner to wash dirty crockery can be a sign of underlying inequality in a relationship. “It’s the fact that whoever leaves [dishes] in the sink expects that someone else will clean them up,” she said. “I think couples who share dishes have a better relationship quality because there isn’t as much resentment.” So, are couples who share household chores like the washing up really happier?

Can washing up improve your sex life?

London Cleaning TipsThe study authors identified a clear link between women who shared the washing up equally with their partners and women who enjoyed more fulfilling sex lives. While inequality over the washing up didn’t appear to affect the sexual satisfaction of male respondents, it was found to be a major bugbear among women. Resentment and arguments are more likely among couples who fail to share domestic chores equally, which the report authors note can adversely affect every area of a relationship – even in the bedroom.

Women are also more likely to compare their own domestic situation to that of their friends. If female respondents knew someone whose partner shared the chores equally whereas their own did not, their satisfaction levels were typically lower across their entire relationship. Study co-author Daniel Carlson explained: “Individuals and couples take stock of their arrangements in comparison to those around them, and those assessments of relative advantage or disadvantage come to shape their feelings about their arrangements and their relationships overall.

“This suggests that as the sharing of other tasks becomes more common, the benefits of sharing – and the costs of not sharing – increase.” Remember, if household chores are causing needless disagreements in your relationship, the team at FastKlean are always here to help, taking domestic tasks off your hands, leaving you with more quality time to spend together.

Cleaning the oven is the chore Brits put off for the longestIs there a household chore that you absolutely detest and try to get away with not doing for as long as possible? According to recent research carried out by Web-Blinds involving some 2,238 UK homeowners, two-thirds of Brits only do the ‘bare minimum’ when it comes to cleaning their house, Ideal Home reports. While this might involve a regular quick vacuum and bleaching the loo, it does suggest that the majority of a home could be being neglected.

Some prefer to bring in outside help from a professional cleaning company, but others are leaving dirt and germs to build up in the areas of their home that they repeatedly put off cleaning. Then, when they do eventually get around to them, dirt has often built up so much that the job is much more laborious than it needs to be, meaning it’s hard work and they hate it, thus beginning the cycle again. So, which chores do Brits hate the most?

Brits’ most-hated domestic chores

Web-Blinds found that UK householders are united in their hatred of certain chores, with the number one most-detested domestic task cited as cleaning the oven. Almost three-quarters (71 per cent) of respondents said this was a job they tried to avoid for as long as possible. Cleaning the windows was the second most-despised chore, with 66% of those questioned hating this task. Meanwhile, dusting high shelves and cupboards came in third place, after 57% of homeowners admitted to rarely doing this. Mopping came in fourth, with 53% of survey respondents saying they hated this chore. Furthermore, just under half (48 per cent) expressed their hatred of cleaning their skirting boards, revealing that they often try to put this off for as long as they can. These chores do tend to involve the greatest amount of reaching up high or crouching down to get into hard-to-reach nooks and crannies, which is probably why so many people put them off indefinitely. But homes can’t just be left gathering dust and dirt forever, can they?

When do Brits actually get around to the cleaning?

Expert Cleaning ServicesRecent research from Ideal Home showed that the average Brit spends 2,175 days doing housework during their lifetime, but with Web-Blinds finding that chores are constantly being put on the back-burner, is this really the case? Almost one-quarter of the people surveyed by Web-Blinds admitted that they only tended to give their house a thorough clean if they knew friends or relatives would be visiting. Some even said they would only clean their bathroom from top to bottom if they knew people would be staying overnight. From this, it seems that Brits are a house-proud nation and want their homes to appear clean to others, but can’t always necessarily be bothered exercising the same standards when it’s just for themselves.

Of course, if you really can’t bring yourself to do a task and are worried about a build-up of dirt and bacteria, you can call in the professionals – the MillaG5 team are here to help make your life easier.

Clean your house to say bye to pesky spiders for goodHalloween is still far away, but you don’t need the drama of finding huge spiders lurking in your bathtub or under your bed just yet. If you’re an arachnophobe, finding an eight-legged creature in your house can set you on edge for days, giving you that horrible feeling that there’s something crawling across your body, even when there isn’t.

You can often be left wondering where on earth they come from and how something so big managed to scuttle across the floor and onto your wall without you noticing. It’s claimed that bringing conkers indoors can help to keep spiders away, but there is in fact no evidence for this. There’s no need to start sealing up all the cracks in your walls and around your windows though, as something as simple as keeping your home clean could put them off coming inside altogether.

Get rid of cobwebs

The first place to start on your spider-banishing spree is by getting rid of any cobwebs in the corners of your rooms. Use a broom handle or your vacuum to clear them, so that any new spiders creeping inside don’t have a ready-made home waiting for them. If the idea of touching a web makes you shudder with horror, remember that you can always call in the professional cleaners, who will dust and vacuum all of your home’s nooks and crannies for you.

Have a good tidy up

Dark, hidden corners are a haven for spiders. If you don’t want to move a stack of magazines to find one hiding underneath, don’t give them the opportunity. Having a thorough tidy up and de-cluttering as much as possible will give spiders fewer places to lurk.

Clean your windows with ammonia

Spiders detest ammonia, so if you want extra reassurance that one isn’t going to climb in through your window and crawl across your face in the middle of the night, clean your windows with a solution made from ammonia and water. To get rid of any smears once you’re finished, apply kerosene to scrunched-up newspaper and go over the windows again. You don’t have to worry about the kerosene making your house stink or leaving you coughing, as it will evaporate straight away. However, it will leave a pretty powerful repellent for spiders and other creepy-crawlies in its wake.

Take advantage of the scents spiders hate

Ammonia isn’t the only substance that spiders can’t stand. They also tend to run from citrus smells, so slice a lemon into quarters and place it underneath your window to stop anything with eight legs from creeping inside. It’ll also leave the room smelling beautifully fresh – just remember to replace the slices with new ones every few days. Peppermint is another scent that spiders hate, so make a homemade air freshener from peppermint oil diluted with water – place it in a spray bottle and your house will soon smell gorgeous to you, but horrible to those spiders you want to repel.

Household Appliance Usage

Brits currently own more household appliances than ever before, even when taking the appliance boom of the 1950s into account, new figures show.

Appliances Direct published a report last month that revealed the typical UK adult uses 9.5 electrical appliances each day, although 78 per cent of people think they use five or fewer, demonstrating just how commonplace reliance on this equipment has become – so much so that some don’t even realise they are using them anymore.

The survey led to the discovery that the television is the appliance that people use the most, followed by the kettle and the microwave. Toasters and coffee machines completed the top five, with the top ten also featuring several appliances designed to make housework easier, including the vacuum cleaner and the washing machine.

Appliances related to health and beauty also ranked highly on the list, with juicers and smoothie makers coming in eighth place and hair appliances taking the ninth spot.

Many appliances are only used occasionally, however, such as bread makers, air conditioning and tumble dryers, which suggests that there are areas where householders could cut down on the amount of money they are spending on certain items.

Bristol residents are apparently already doing this where possible, as the poll results showed they typically use just six appliances a day on average. In contrast, people living in Birmingham use 12, meaning they could save themselves some money on their energy bills and time spent cleaning appliances if they were to cut down on their usage.

Mark Kelly, the marketing manager at Appliances Direct, commented: “Appliances are there to make our lives easier and British consumers are clearly embracing that. If there’s a machine or appliance to reduce the effort we need to put in, then we’re going to take advantage of that.

“Time-poor Brits are always on the lookout for solutions to make cooking, housework and entertaining the family more efficient and advances in technology mean there are more appliances on the market to help them achieve this.”

However, with an increased number of appliances in the home comes more housework and cleaning that needs to be done. Appliances such as TVs and computers need to be dusted regularly, while ovens, microwaves and dishwashers can quickly become dirty and unhygienic if used regularly.

As a nation of people who are constantly trying to save time and reduce the level of effort they need to put into tasks, hiring a professional cleaning service could help to take this extra housework away from households, allowing them to spend more time relaxing in front of their much-loved television with a hot drink from the nation’s second favourite appliance, the kettle.

To say that parenting is hard work is one of the biggest understatements you could make. Even so, the findings of a new study by Crystal Ski Holidays outlining the demands on mums are still quite startling. Perhaps the most surprising result is that a typical mother is called for by their kids a staggering 9,563 times every year.

How much housework does a typical mum do?Of course, there are plenty of reasons behind the various cries of “mum” or “mummy”. Some kids might be making a polite request, while others might be actively complaining. On the other hand, maybe they’re calling out because they have been hurt or because they’re bored and want some attention.

But the figure gives some idea of the sheer number of times a mother has to drop what they might be doing and give their child the attention they either want or need. It’s even more shocking when you consider what makes up the rest of a typical mum’s day. Indeed, the research showed they do 499 loads of washing every year, as well as make the beds 514 times and getting through 239 piles of ironing.

And that’s before we mention the number of school runs they have to do – 364 a year incidentally – or the number of meals they cook (806). This still isn’t a full account of a regular mum’s day, as we’ve not mentioned the amount of time they spend tidying away toys and games, settling arguments between siblings, helping with homework and providing emotional support.

A third of all mothers would like some leisure time once in a while

House Cleaning ChoresWe really could go on for a while listing all the daily tasks in a typical mother’s life. Is it any wonder then that one in three mums admitted they would like some time to themselves once in a while? For all the joys that come with having children, the demands are greater than those that come with a full-time job, and plenty of mums will be managing this on top of their parental responsibilities.

So perhaps it wouldn’t hurt for some mothers to admit they can’t do it all themselves or at least choose not to. For instance, they could take up the option of bringing in a professional cleaning service. This could be a great way to ensure they aren’t slaving away doing the housework quite as often, and in the process, it will free up valuable time that they could spend time enjoying with their kids, rather than clearing up after them.

As a recent survey by Slumberdown revealed, a typical parent spends more than 59 full days a year doing housework. By contrast, they get to spend only 52 days a year enjoying quality time with their kids. A spokesperson for Crystal Ski Holidays said: “This research highlights the huge amount of effort that goes into being a mum. “Not only the domestic chores but being constantly at the beck and call of your children and being called upon nearly 10,000 times a year is a staggering amount.”

Cleaning is a job that should be done on a regular basis. It involves cleaning of different areas of the house like the living room, bedrooms, kitchen area and the washroom area. When cleaning, professional cleaners use equipment such as rubber gloves for skin protection, brushes, mops, soaps and furniture polishers.

They advise to clean the dishes by using a dish washing soap and a sponge, clean, then wipe them using a clean dry cloth and put them in their respective kitchen cabinets. A damp cloth could then be used to wipe the kitchen counters and cabinets to prevent dust and stains from spreading. The last step after cleaning the kitchen should be emptying the dustbins and dumping the waste in the dumpster. Organic and inorganic waste must be thrown in different trashcans since inorganic waste could be recycled in the recycling factories whilst inorganic waste could later be used as a farm fertilizer.

Most household detergents contain chemicals. A good example are the oven cleaners. They contain a mixture of chemicals that are used to remove all forms of dirt from the oven. Some of the toxic chemicals contained in these household cleaners include ammonia, chlorides, lye, and phosphorylates. Many households use these chemicals on a daily basis to clean their homes. However, these are oblivious dangers that these chemicals pose. These chemicals are well known to enhance:

Corrosion: Corrosion is the wearing away of component parts in home items making them age at a fast rate. Metallic components undergo corrosion when exposed to chemicals that facilitate corrosion. Some of these cleaning agents contain chemicals that are dangerous when used on fridges, ovens or other metallic/plastic appliances, because the appliances get eaten away.

Combustion: Combustion is the burning process. Some of the cleaning agents contain chemicals that enhance burning. When used in cleaning, they make the cleaned items highly combustible. These items can thus attract fire or catch fire on a tiny spark. Some of the materials cleaned may be carpets, floors and walls, or electrical appliances.

Poisoning: Poisoning can occur in different ways. It can be through ingestion of harmful chemicals or through inhaling the chemicals. It is easy for a young child to get poisoned by licking hands that touched surfaces that were cleaned using harsh chemicals. It is also easy to inhale these harsh chemicals when their fumes are spread around the house. This could lead to death, or respiratory related illnesses.

If you have no time or you are not sure on what cleaning detergents you need to using,  you might want to hire professional cleaners. However, you need to be very careful when selecting the right cleaning company for you and ensuring that they are using green cleaning products that do not pose any risks to you or your loved ones.
